What Makes New Ulm Home
Located where the Cottonwood and Minnesota Rivers meet, New Ulm is a historic city in southern Minnesota and the seat of Brown County. It was founded in 1854 by German immigrants and named after Ulm, Germany.
Industries That Move New Ulm Forward
New Ulm’s economy is rooted in agriculture and food production, with strong ties to livestock, corn, soybeans, and dairy. The community is also supported by several major employers in manufacturing and healthcare. Companies such as 3M, Kraft Heinz, and AMPI (Associated Milk Producers Inc.) operate large manufacturing facilities in the area, providing significant employment opportunities.
Healthcare is another key part of the local economy, with Allina Health’s New Ulm Medical Center and clinic serving as one of the region’s largest employers and a central resource for the surrounding communities.
New Ulm is also home to Martin Luther College, a private college established in 1995 that prepares students for ministry and education in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, as well as the historic August Schell Brewing Company, one of Minnesota’s oldest and most well-known breweries.
Things to Do Around New Ulm
Known as one of the most German-influenced cities in the United States, New Ulm earned nicknames such as the “Polka Capital” and “Most German of German Cities.” Residents proudly celebrate their German heritage and history to this day through local traditions, festivals, and other events.
August Schell Brewing Company
Founded in 1860 by German immigrant August Schell, the August Schell Brewing Company is the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the U.S. and the oldest in Minnesota. Beloved for its German-inspired lagers, the company reached new heights in 2002 when it acquired Grain Belt Beer. Today, visitors and locals alike gather at Schell’s Bierhalle and Biergarten to enjoy the lagers that have defined this historic brewery for more than 160 years.
New Ulm Oktoberfest
This annual celebration of New Ulm’s German heritage is regularly recognized by national travel publications as one of the top Oktoberfest celebrations in the United States. Held over the first two weekends of October, Oktoberfest takes place across multiple locations throughout New Ulm, including downtown, Schell’s, and Morgan Creek Vineyards, where visitors and locals can experience parades, polka music, live entertainment, and classic German markets.
Hermann Heights Monument
Standing high above New Ulm, the 102-foot monument depicts Hermann the German, who liberated Germany from Roman occupation during the time of Caesar Augustus. Every year, thousands of visitors climb the spiral staircase within the monument to look at the scenic, panoramic view of southern Minnesota through the statue’s eyes.
Turner Hall
Built in 1873, Turner Hall is the oldest continuously operating bar in Minnesota. This two-story gymnasium, rathskeller, and social club is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and features more than 70 feet of historic German murals that depict European landscapes and culture, making it a cultural hub and popular destination in New Ulm for both locals and tourists.
Minnesota Music Hall of Fame
