Bank Midwest News & Resources
What Makes Fairmont Home
Known as the City of Lakes for its scenic chain of five lakes, Fairmont is the seat of Martin County. With a population of over 10,000, Fairmont combines small-town charm with big city amenities. The town is home to over 25 parks, trails, golf courses, and outdoor recreation, making it appealing for families, retirees, and tourists. Fairmont also boasts a dynamic arts scene with cultural attractions such as the Fairmont Opera House and the Red Rock Center for the Arts.
Industries That Move Fairmont Forward
Fairmont is a dynamic hub for agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. Farms lead the way as Martin County is one of Minnesota’s largest producers of hogs and corn, as well as strong activity in soybeans and cattle. In manufacturing, Fairmont is home to both local and national names such as Avery Weight-Tronix, and Fairmont Foods.
Things to Do Around Fairmont
The Chain of Lakes
Named for its lakes, Fairmont is home to five lakes, including Lake Sisseton, Lake Budd, Lake George, Amber Lake, and Hall Lake, which are all connected through channels. It is one of the largest attractions that bring tourists to the area, where visitors and locals can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, and other watersports.
Red Rock Center for the Arts
Named for its building made of Sioux quartzite and limestone, the Red Rock Center for the Arts was originally built in 1898 as a church. In 2000, the building was threatened with demolition, but the Martin County Preservation Association restored it to its former glory, and officially opened in 2005 as the Red Rock Center of today. Visitors can explore art exhibits, art education, and concerts.
Martin County Historical Society & Pioneer Museum
Step into the story of Fairmont at the Martin County Historical Society Pioneer Museum, where the region’s early settlers and rich heritage come to life. Founded in 1929, the society is dedicated to preserving and sharing Martin County’s history for generations to come. In 2023, the Minneapolis Star Tribune ran a story on an individual who visited all 87 county museums in Minnesota, who rated Fairmont’s as the best in the state.
Chubb House
Dubbed Red Rock Center’s Historic Sister, the Chubb House was built in 1867 by Orville Chubb, the town’s first doctor and one of the founders of Fairmont. Stepping into the brick house will send you back in time to how the settlers of Fairmont lived in the 19th century.
