Bank Midwest News & Resources
What Makes Okoboji Home
Okoboji’s story dates back to the 19th century, when settlers built homes and businesses along the shores after a bridge connected West and East Okoboji in the 1860s, and formally became a township in 1922.
Today, Okoboji is home to less than 800 residents, but attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the state every year to enjoy the waters and shorelines of West Okoboji Lake, one of Iowa’s Great Lakes.
Industries That Move Okoboji Forward
Dickinson County’s economy is powered by a strong mix of tourism, manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and agriculture. While the Iowa Great Lakes drive a thriving hospitality and recreational industry, year-round stability comes from manufacturing and healthcare employers. Together, these industries create a dynamic local economy that supports both seasonal businesses and long-term growth.
Things to Do Around Okoboji

Lake Okoboji
West Lake Okoboji is one of just three natural blue-water lakes in the world. Known for its clear waters, the lake is a popular recreational destination for tourists and locals alike, offering opportunities for boating, skiing, fishing, swimming, and lakeside dining.
Arnolds Park Amusement Park
Located on the shores of Lake Okoboji, Arnolds Park is one of the oldest amusement parks in the nation. Built in 1889, the park features over 20 rides on its 20-acre site, including The Legend, one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the U.S., which was built in 1927. Park admission is free, and families have the choice to pay for the rides they want to experience.
