Enroll in Guardian Alerts Today

This is a FREE* service offered by Bank Midwest to help you keep on top of certain types of debit card activity. You’ll receive text alerts so you can respond quickly if a transaction is suspicious. The number of alerts you may receive will be based on your card usage.

Sign up to receive text alerts when your debit card is used for:
  • Authorization amounts greater than $400
  • Transactions where the card is not present or the card number is manually keyed
  • International transactions

How Does it Work?

  1. Register your card and mobile phone number through the Guardian Alerts website. Confirm your enrollment by texting a code provided during the registration process.
  2. Then, if your debit card is used for one of the three transaction types named above, a text message will be sent to the mobile number(s) registered (up to 3 numbers can be enrolled). If you receive a text message which references:

An authorized transaction — you don’t need to do anything. After 12 hours, the alert expires and it’s assumed that the transaction is valid.

A transaction that was not conducted by you or anyone you authorized, please reply as instructed to deactivate the card and prevent future use. You will need to reply using the code included in the message within 12 hours of the transaction to deactivate your card.

NOTE: If you reply to a text alert, your card will be immediately deactivated. This action cannot be reversed. A new card will automatically be ordered for you. If you do not wish to receive a replacement debit card, contact Bank Midwest at 888.902.5662 within one business day.

Gather the following information when you’re ready to register your card:

  • 16-digit debit card number
  • The last 4 digits of the cardholder’s Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number and zip code
  • Mobile number(s) for the device receiving the text message (register up to three)

IMPORTANT: Before alerts can be sent, confirm your enrollment by successfully texting your enrollment code provided by the Guardian website when setting up a device.

Text Message Alerts

  • If a message exceeds 160 characters you may receive multiple texts to get the complete message.
  • Replying to a text with the word STOP will cancel all subscriptions to that mobile device for all enrolled cards.
  • The number of alerts you receive will be based on your card usage.
  • You may reply to a text with the word HELP to receive service information.

  • The cell phone or mobile device must have the ability to send and receive text messages and the use of “short codes” must not be blocked. Short codes are special telephone numbers, often five digits long, which are used to send text messages from mobile phones.
  • You can unsubscribe from this service entirely at the Guardian website. Cardholders can also discontinue alerts by texting the word STOP to 27576. Replying to a text with the word STOP will cancel all subscriptions to registered mobile devices for all enrolled cards.
  • Enrollments will be good for a period of one year. You will be notified prior to expiration of your Guardian account and may text a reply to renew. The renewal message displays as: “Guardian acct expires soon. To renew for a year Reply AA1234YES. Msg&Data rates may apply, Msgs per issuer settings. Reply STOP to cancel. Reply HELP for Help.”
  • Changing your mobile service provider will require you to re-enroll your mobile device in the Guardian alert program.
  • Some mobile service providers require that we send a 30-day subscription reminder message to their customers participating in the Guardian program. You will receive an alert message every 30 days reminding you of your subscription if your mobile service provider is Sprint, Nextel, Boost, or Virgin. The alert message will display as: “Reminder: You have subscribed to Guardian transaction alerts for Bank Midwest. Message and data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help. Reply STOP to cancel.”

What will the text message look like?

Here’s a sample text alert for a transaction above the $400 limit with notes about the components that make up this message:

BkMid1 Guardian Alert on card xxxx2 at 12345678901234567890123453 for $499.004 – Reply AA1234NO5 if unauthorized. Reply STOP to cancel alerts.

1 – BkMid is a shortened name for Bank Midwest.
2 – Only the last 4 digits of the card are referenced for security reasons.
3 – This unique string is a reference number for the Fraud Center.
4 – The amount of the transaction is provided. All transactions for an amount greater than $400 will generate a text alert.
5 – This is the code that you must use in your text reply to deactivate your debit card.

How do I register for the Guardian alerts service?

Signing up is easy. In fact, you can sign up in just a few steps at the Guardian website

Can I request the criteria for alert messages be customized for me? For example, can I increase or decrease the amount of the transaction before an alert is generated?

No. Bank Midwest has determined the criteria for the types of transactions that will generate a Guardian Alerts text message. These rules apply to all debit card customers and cannot be customized for individual cardholders.

As a cardholder, is it safe to receive text alerts regarding my transactions?

Yes. Text alerts do not contain detailed cardholder information. Only the last 4-digits of your card number appear in any text message.

What happens if I don’t reply to a text message?

Nothing. 12 hours after the transaction, the alert will expire and it is assumed that the transaction is valid.

What happens if I reply to the text believing that the transaction is fraudulent?

Your debit card will automatically be deactivated preventing your card from future use. Once your card is deactivated, this action cannot be reversed. A new card will automatically be ordered for you. If you do not wish to receive a replacement debit card, contact Bank Midwest within one business day.

I’ve received calls from the Fraud Center on behalf of Bank Midwest in the past regarding suspicious card activity. Now, will I receive both text alerts and calls?

Yes, because these are two different security solutions. It’s possible you could receive a text message and a call. The text alerts will automatically be generated for three specific types of transactions – whether or not there’s any sense of suspicious activity:

  • Authorization amounts greater than $400
  • Transactions where the card is not present or the card number is manually keyed
  • International transactions

Fraud Center staff will know when you’ve received a text alert on a transaction. If you reply to a text alert, analysts will work the fraud case, deactivate the debit card, and notify Bank Midwest. Fraud Center analysts will place phone calls to cardholders regarding suspicious card activity using a different set of guidelines.

What if I received a text alert for a transaction but I’m not sure whether it is fraudulent or not?

If you have any questions about a transaction and whether it was authorized or fraudulent, please review your account details online. Or, you can call your local Bank Midwest branch or Customer Support at 888.902.5662. You have 12 hours from the time of the transaction to investigate it. If no response is received, it’s assumed that the transaction is valid.

Will I recognize that the text is from Bank Midwest?

The text message will begin with “BkMid Guardian Alert … ”. BkMid is a shortened abbreviation for Bank Midwest.

Does it matter what kind of mobile device or carrier I have?

You are responsible for any text messaging fees from your carrier. Message and data rates may apply. There are no additional fees from Bank Midwest.
